You'll need:

  • Your Riley PDF pattern

  • Preferred fabric

  • Color matching thread

  • 3.5 cm wide elastic

  • fusible interfacing (light weight)

  • fusible interfacing tape

  • Sewing machine

Seam Allowances

  • 1 cm seam

  • 1 cm hem

How To Sew It

How To Sew A Jumper Dress - Sewing Instructions

Once everything is set up, let's begin sewing. We have included easy-to-follow instructions with our patterns.

Just follow the instructions below!

Sewing the bust

Apply fusible interlining on the wrong side of the facing pieces.

Sew the side seams of the front and back bust pieces, right sides together. Press the seam open and overlock. fig 1

Sew the side seams of the facing pieces, right sides together. Press the seam open. Overlock the hem of the facing

Pin together the top of the bust with the top of the facing, right sides together, taking care to meet the notches. Sew them together using a 1 cm seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance in the round areas. Sew a topstitch on the facing where is possible ( neckline and back), catching the seam allowance also. Pull the bust inside-out and press in place.fig2

Sew the waistband pieces together on the short edges, right side to right side, in pairs. Press the seams open.

Place the bodice between the waistband (right sides together) and the waistband lining (wrong side to right side) according to the notches and sew along using a 1 cm seam allowance. Press the seam orienting the seam allowance towards the lining and sew a topstitch at 1-2mm on the waistband lining, including the lining and the seam allowance in the seam. fig 3

Topstitch the bottom of the waistband with the waistband lining at 0.5 cm from the raw edge, leaving 3-4 cm open to insert the elastic. fig 4

Sewing the pockets

Apply fusible interfacing tape on the right side of the pocket opening and overlock the raw edges. fig 5

Overlock the sides of the skirt pattern pieces

Place the pocket to each side of the skirt pattern pieces, right side to right side. Match the notches and the neatened edges. Pin in place.

Sew the pockets in place using a 1cm seam allowance. Sew from the waist down, until the second notch. Open the pocket out and topstitch at 0.5 cm from the seam, on the pocket pieces, catching the seam allowance also. Press the seam. fig 6

Sew the pocket bags together, on the round edge, right side to right side. Press the seam. fig 7

Clip the seam allowances at the second notch, on the pocket and on the skirt.

In a straight line, sew the side of the pocket left open and the side of the skirt. Press the seams open.

Alight the side seams at the top, an sew a topstitch from the waist until the first notch. Sew on top of the side seam. fig 8

Sew a straight line at 0.5 cm from the raw edge on the waist, catching the top of the pocket in the seam, to secure the pocket. fig 9

Sewing the skirt

Take the ruffle pieces and sew all 5 together, right side to right side, on the short edges, to make a big circle. Press the seams open and overlock. fig 10

Overlock the hem of the ruffles. Turn the hem up 1cm to the wrong side of the fabric. Press and sew at 0.8cm. fig 11

Using a gathering foot, gather the top of the big ruffle pieces, at a medium pace. fig 12

Pin the top of the ruffle piece, with the bottom of the skirt, right sides together. Sew the using a 1 cm seam allowance. Overlock the seam and press gently the seam allowance facing up. fig 13

Pin the skirt with the waistband at the waist, right sides together. Sew along the waist, using a 1 cm seam allowance, leaving 3-4 cm open the insert the elastic. Press the seam facing down.

Cut a piece of non-roll elastic the length required to go around the waist comfortably (see the right measurement for your size in the fabric requirements table above)

Pin one end of the elastic to the fabric just below the opening. Pin a safety pin to the other end and thread through the casing. fig 14

Pull the two ends of the elastic together and machine to join in a square shape with an X for strength. Push the elastic into the casing and sew across the gap. Overlock the waist seam.

Sewing the cord

Apply fusible interlining on the belt pieces (if needed)

Sew the 2 belt pieces together at the center back, right sides together, at 1 cm. Press the seam open.

Fold the belt in half, right side to right side so the fusible is showing. Pin.

Sew along all the raw edges using a 1 cm seam allowance. Remember to leave a gap of approx. 3in (8cm) at the center back to turn the belt through. Remove the bulk from the corners. fig 15

Once the belt has been turned to the right side, press the seam carefully so that it is on the very edge.

Hand sew the gap at the center back closed with a flat fell or blind hem stitch.
